"You do not recall everything, I know. Often both the mind and the body need time to adjust. Perhaps it is nature's way of overcoming the fear humans instinctively experience during the initial feedings."

Rupert found himself unable to speak. The emotions roiling through him were so confusing that for a moment he actually felt he might faint.

"Let me explain it again," Kaspar continued. "Yes, I am a revenant—a vampire, though that word did not yet exist when I first became one. Yes, I drank your blood and I found it delicious. I plan to drink some more tonight. Afterward, or perhaps at the same time, I will enjoy your body and you will most likely enjoy mine as well. What do you think of that?"

Rupert was shocked to imagine the scene Kaspar described. The thought of Kaspar—or anyone—tearing his flesh and feasting on his blood horrified him. Still, part of him craved it—more than he had ever craved anything before. He recalled watching the people who were addicted to drink and returned to his father's tavern night after night, hollow-eyed and desperate. He now understood what they felt.

"I … think I would like that, master," he confessed. As shameful as that answer seemed, he saw no point in denying or avoiding the truth.

"You would. You may trust me on that. Still, I am sure you have many questions. Ask me anything you like and I promise to answer truthfully."

It occurred to Rupert that Count Kaspar might be willing to answer because he planned to kill him afterward, thus keeping the secret contained. Or did Kaspar just assume no one would believe him if he repeated such stories? In any case, he had to satisfy his curiosity. He cleared his throat. "So ... the old legends are true? The dead really do rise from their graves and attack the living?"

"Of course not. Can you picture me lying in a dirty grave?" Kaspar smoothed a hand over his fine waistcoat. "I prefer a nice, comfortable bedchamber to rest in, not to mention someone to share it with me. As far as attacking anyone, it is true that I must take a certain amount of blood to survive. For the most part, I imbibe it at the table in a civilized way, from the bottles that I pay a few discreet villagers to fill from their own veins. They come to no harm if the procedure is done properly. At other times, I take some from a willing participant."

"You never take it by force?" Rupert touched his neck, which still felt tender and sore. He imagined a horrific bruise forming there. Could everyone see it but him?

"I will not lie and say I never have. I also cannot truthfully say I have never taken a life. However, I am not a mindless killer. Suffice to say that I believe some sorts of humans, and vampires for that matter, do not deserve to share this Earth with the rest of us. I have the ability to rid our world of them, and therefore I do so when duty or circumstances demand it.
